For larger projects, general contractors subcontract with commercial stone companies.  These companies have expertise at sourcing quality stone from low labor cost locations.  They purchase cut to fit product and deliver it to the project site. They send in installation teams that may come from across the country.  This process works well when there are no cutting mistakes or custom pieces in the project.  Additionally when there is follow-up work, the installation team may be on another project in another part of the country.

For smaller projects, contractors generally work with local companies.  This provides the advantage of working with local companies: easy customization and on-going support. However, they often lack materials expertise.
